Parallel parking looks scary—but when broken into steps, by Ez2drive Academy driving instructor in Victoria, BC it’s very manageable.

What ICBC Looks For

  • Observation

  • Control

  • Distance from the curb

  • Safe positioning

Parallel Parking: Step-by-Step

  1. Pull Up Beside the Front Car
Stop beside the car in front of the space, about 1 meter (3 feet) apart.

  2. Check All Around
Shoulder check both sides and behind.

  3. Reverse Straight Back
Reverse until your rear bumper lines up with the other car’s rear bumper.

  4. Turn the Wheel Fully Toward the Curb
Reverse slowly while steering fully toward the curb.

  5. Straighten the Wheels
When your car is at about a 45-degree angle, straighten the wheel.

  6. Turn Away From the Curb
Continue reversing and turn the wheel fully away from the curb to bring the front in.

  7. Center and Stop
Stop within 30 cm (12 inches) of the curb.

Automatic Failures to Avoid

  • Touching the curb hard

  • Mounting the curb

  • Forgetting shoulder checks

  • Hitting another vehicle
